Unknown, Copy of 1827 Estate map (Un-published). SDV311078.

Barrow shown on estate map of 1827 on the parish boundary.

Vis=22/4/1997 (griffith) monument as described by ea above. Clearly much of the body of the barrow survives undisturbed and potentially in good condition.

Vis=11/3/1996 (ea) poor condition but still recognisable. Covered in tussocky grass + gorse. One large conifer growing on se side and smaller trees around most of edge. A large conifer on s side has been cut down recently and timber from this is lying on n edge.

Vis=5/9/1981 (grinsell + turner) barrow covered with trees and undergrowth. Large hollow in centre. Barrow diameter 9m, height 0.4m (grinsell).

This appears to be the eord birig, or earth barrow, which formed part of the boundary of the seven manses of land at dawlish granted to leofric, later bishop of exeter, by edward the confessor in a charter of 1044. Still in the hands of his successor, osbern, at the time of domesday (davidson).

Site visited on 31st August 1991. Small barrow adjacent to road running to Ashcombe Tower, which follows the line of the ancient Portway. 9 metres in diameter, 0.4 metres high, with a large hollow in centre and a tree growing out of each end.
