Summary
The Devon and Somerset Railway company was formed in 1864 to establish a rail link between Barnstaple and Taunton. The railway was originally broad gauge but was converted to the standard gauge in 1881. In 1901 the line was taken over by the Great Western Railway. It was closed in October 1966.

Full description
Unknown, Unknown (Migrated Record). SDV1416.
Various documents and maps in dro corcerned with purchase of land in this area from the fortescue estates, dating from mid 19th century onwards (dro). Vis=26,27+28/9/1984 (griffiths) railway denuded of track, but embankments, bridges and tunnel at ss691289 survive. Proposed route of ndlr threatens much of the line.
