Substantial country house. Of the late medieval house parts of the chapel remain (see subsheet). House rebuilt in the 1480s. Drastically remodelled in the 1750s when gatehouse demolished and chapel converted into library thereby destroying part of the medieval roof. Largely rebuilt in 1802. Major restoration in 1940s. Clad in yellow mathematical tiles in flemish bond. Gable end and hipped roofs. Two storeys and basement throughout. Plaster, wood and wrought-iron work in interior. The site of the manor of nutwell mentioned in a 1566 survey of lord dynham's estates. Some details of ownership and tenancies at the time are given (chope).

Author notes how the tenants of nutwell manor, which he calls a privileged estate from their point of view, could be said to be becoming free from the manorial system of tenure and succession (carter).

Nutwell court. Recorded as a separate estate in the domesday book, fortified by sir john dynham in the 15th. Century, a strong point in the civil war operations around exeter, the old house was acquired by the drakes in 1731. In 1755, the 5th. Baronet wrecked the medieval house, demolished the great gatehouse, cut through the timbered roof of the 14th. Century chapel to make a plastered ceiling for his library. This work was cleared away at great expense in the 19th. Century and it is now a stuccoed late georgian block of 5 by 5 bays and the entrance has a soanian loggia (scott).

Vis=25/9/1978 (western morning news) proposal to convert the grounds of nutwell court into a wildlife park and to build 170 chalets.

Nutwell manor was given by geoffrey, lord of dinan, to the abbey of marmoutier at tours. He had been given it by henry i. The chapel was converted into a library during the 18th century (chope,1918).
