Summary
The base and bottom part, including the entrance, of an FW3/22 pillbox.
Full description
1996: On the beach immediately opposite the point where Beach Road terminates at the sea wall, is a “rock structure” – a wide expanse of broken concrete and rock. In the middle of this is the base and bottom part, including the entrance, of an FW3/22 pillbox. <1>
Aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1960 show buildings, possibly a beach café, in this position. The “rock structure” starts to appear on a 1981 aerial photograph. <2> <3> <4>
Three photos of site. <5>
2009: Visited in November 2009, the entire area of the beach has altered here with the introduction of cut rock breakwaters. The "rock structure", and the remains, have now gone although the nearest of the new breakwaters has pieces of concrete in it which may be part of the original pillbox. One photo of site. <6>
