Summary

Pillbox (destroyed)

Full description

Contemporary records state, “Pill box; barbed wire. Field by Ashingdon School. Map ref. 304125” and “Defence works, Pillbox. Ashingdon Cross Roads. Map ref. 304125” (Mil. Ed.) <1>

This pillbox can be clearly seen on an aerial photograph taken in May 1946. It stood on the W side of Ashingdon Road opposite the junction with Canewdon Road. It was hexagonal with equal sides, probably a Type FW3/22. An aerial photograph taken in June 1960 shows it to have been demolished by that time. <2> <3> <4>

Although the pillbox has been cleared away, signs of it can still be seen as pieces of broken concrete in the field alongside the roadway – some of them with the indentation marks of the reinforcement rods.
