Full description

Contemporary records state, “3 pillboxes. Hawkwell Hall Farm. Map ref. 306102, 304098, 306095.” (Mil. Ed.) <1>

Ironwell Lane is a green lane, which bisects flat lands S of Hawkwell Hall Farm. It is, and was during the 1940’s, tree-lined. Nothing positive of the pillbox at 304098 can be made out on an aerial photograph taken in May 1946. <2> However, the remains of it still survive as typical WWII concrete and rubble scattered around, mainly on the N side of Ironwell Lane. It is identifiable mainly from the marks left by the steel reinforcement rods and its conformity to the known pillbox remains at TQ 8618 9103 (SMR 20706).
