Summary
"Cantilever" Pillbox (destroyed),
Full description
Low-level aerial photographs taken in August 1947 show, very clearly, the wartime defences of Rochford Airfield. The NE corner was particularly well defended with four pillboxes, all close to each other. This one was an F.C. Construction Company "cantilever" type an upside-down saucer of concrete suspended on a central pillar to give a 360 degree field of fire. <1> <2>
The site is now the southern boundary of a golf course but nothing of the pillbox now survives.
