Summary

Pillbox (destroyed)

Full description

It is recalled locally that a pillbox once stood on the corner of Guithaven Street at its junction with Mill Lane. Its indistinct shape can be made out on an aerial photograph taken in 1946, standing on a small triangle of grass when the two roads meet. This position is a few yards N of an old fire engine shed. <1> <2>

The siting of this pillbox would have ensured a clear field of fire westwards across the River Brain and would have continued the ring of defences around the town. Nothing of the pillbox now survives and the S road of the fork around the pillbox has now been remodelled to grass and pavement.
