Summary
Pillbox (destroyed)
Full description
Contemporary records state, “Pill box; Breaking of doorway through garage. White Horse Inn, Widford”. <1>
It is known from 1946 photographs that a road barrier crossed the A12 at the White Horse public house and that it was probably “anchored” to a garage where the car park now is. It is apparent from the above entry that a pillbox was built adjoining the garage with its entry point through one of the garage walls. This strong point would have added fire support to the road barrier defences against an attack up the A12 from the south. <2>
Nothing survives of the garage and the area is now the White Horse car park.
<1> unknown, 1968, War Time Contraventions 1968, Chelmsford (LIST). SEX31436.
