Summary
Pillbox (destroyed)
Full description
The band of anti-tank pimples (SMR 20934) from the road barrier across Writtle Road (SMR 20933) ran to a pillbox which stood on the boundary of Bacon’s Garage. It can be seen on an aerial photograph taken in June 1946 as an hexagonal Type FW3/22, a small infantry pillbox commonly used as a Home Guard strong point. <1> Contemporary records state, “Pill Box ….. Writtle Rd, Allotments, Allotment No. 2. Map ref. 141245”. (Mil. Ed.) <2> An aerial photograph taken in March 1948 shows that the pillbox had been removed by that date. <3>
The site is now grass alongside the entrance to Chelmsford Crematorium.
