Summary

WWII pillbox

Full description

Contemporary records state, ‘Wiring. 2 Pill Boxes and Gun Turrets. Field S. of Brook Rd. and rear of Swan Inn. Map ref. 435224.’ (Mil. Ed.) <1>

What is almost certainly one of the two pillboxes can be seen on 1945 aerial photographs. It stood at the field edge on the S side of Brook Road, a huge rectangular, flat-roofed structure with a projecting entrance on the shorter E side. It looks very similar to a Type FW3/28a artillery pillbox but the small projecting entrance belies this. Nevertheless, it was a formidable defence side. Nothing else can be seen in this field and the other pillbox is thought to have been, in fact, on the N side of Brook Road (SMR 21308). <2> <3>

Nothing of the pillbox now survives.
