WWII pillbox

Full description

Contemporary records state, ‘Wiring. 2 Pill Boxes and Gun Turrets. Field S. of Brook Rd. and rear of Swan Inn. Map ref. 435224.’ (Mil. Ed.) <1>

One of the two pillboxes can be seen on 1945 aerial photographs on the S side of Brook Road (SMR 21306). The other is thought to have been on the N side. The same aerial photographs show four buildings, in a group, in the SE corner of a field close to the road. Two are Nissen huts, one is a long pitched-roof hut and the other is probably a pillbox. The shape is uncertain – straight rear and side faces, unclear front face(s). <2> <3>

Nothing of either of the two pillboxes now survives.
