Full description

Earthwork, defensive ditch, probably late C19 to protect searchlight/gun battery east of church (see 9008). Associated stone boundary markers for `B. O.' (Board of Ordnance), therefore pre-1855, and `W(uparrow symbol)D', therefore post-1855. The site may also relate to the 1402 application to the commissoners in London to take defensive measures in the area against the threat from French raiders. Sea wall additions in 1987 were observed by JPJ Catton. <1> <2> <3>

Site Assessment = Part of the unique military system in this area. Overgrown with sycamore saplings. Threatened by Planning Application THU/205/89.
