June 2012: A study of wartime aerial photographs at the National Monuments Record, Swindon, has revealed that this site, W of the Oil Storage Depot, was in fact a Defended Area. Clearly established as one of a number of such areas sited to protect the depot, 7 rifle / machine gun pits can be seen, each of them dug out and earthed around. Two of them appear to have central pedestals, possibly for mountiing a light anti-aircraft machine gun. These defence works are in a line, facing NW across a deep ditch. At the extreme south end is a pillbox (EHER 10326). The site is just N of a similar Defended Area (EHER 14768) which borders the railway line. After the war, this entire area became part of the huge oil storage complex of Shell Haven and Thames Haven. Some years ago, this western part of the site was abandoned and cleared. Now, in July 2012, it lies as derelict land.
