Summary
Pillbox (destroyed)
Full description
A plan of the wartime defences along the seafront at Clacton-on-Sea (see SMR 21178) shows a pillbox, annotated ‘M’, on the clifftop walk by the SW corner of a shelter. <1> However, an aerial photograph taken in July 1941 shows no shelter here (having clearly been taken away) and what appears to be a camouflaged structure a few yards to the E.
An aerial photograph taken in July 1946 shows that by that date the entire section of walkway and been cleared and re-tarmaced and the shelter replaced. With some doubt as to the exact position of the pillbox, the NGR above is that shown on the plan. <2> <3>
