Summary
Roman building.
Full description
Roman building. <1> Scheduling form gives NGR as TQ 450974. <2> A quantity of tegulae and imbrices, fragments of local quartz-gritted ware, mortaria fragments, fine orange ware and 2 fragments of Niedermendig lava quern found in the topsoil, Roman material visible when visited in 1984 by Field Monument Warden. The site is almost on the brow of a hill which then slopes gently eastwards to the River Roding on the far side of which is the Little London Roman site (see 0000). <3> <4> Finds collected in 1976 by T. Betts and F. Clark over a wide area around TQ 450974, seem to be the ones listed above. Prehistoric finds also (see 7270, 7271). It was also reported in 1976 that a Roman villa had been excavated at TQ 450974 - is this the same as the scheduled site? <5> <6>
Site Assessment = Possible unauthorised excavation on scheduled villa in 1976. <5>
