Full description

A late Iron Age butt beaker and two amphorae found on Purwell housing estate: Hitchin Museum (Acc 1590-1) <1>. The OS Record states that 'Hitchin Museum have no knowledge of the present location of the above material' <2>. The NGR is for the middle of the housing estate, built pre-1939 and post-1945.
The Hitchin Museum archaeological material was transferred to Letchworth Museum in 1976. The Letchworth Museum records give no.1590 as 'fragments' of butt beaker, and no.1591 as a single amphora of a yellow-brown fabric, missing its rim and handles; this was 'dug up on Purwell Lane Housing Estate while laying drains in 1948' and given to Hitchin Museum in 1950 by the UDC Clerk of Works <4>.
