Full description
A medieval borough; the earliest documented reference is in 1306-1336 when it was taxed as a borough. It also sent MPs to Parliament in 1311 <1>.
The town was the property of the Bishops of London who owned Waytemore Castle [28], and was laid out beside a channel of the river Stort [30730] and the castle. To bring trade to the town the bishops diverted the highway into Essex away from Stane Street [4680], the Roman road, to cross the river at the castle. The river was diverted away from the town in 1968.
