Full description
Cartographic evidence shows that the site lies across the inner and outer moats of Hertford castle. By the 17th-18th century the area had been landscaped and the moats filled in. Evaluation in 2002 <1>, and observation in 2007 <2>, found no archaeological finds or features, but a layer of grey clay found in a test pit <1> appeared to be a silt deposit, possibly from within the upper part of the profile of the castle moat. Undated environmental samples from four foundation piles in the area of the inner moat showed that it had been a broad open ditch with slow flowing water, surrounded by a scrubland habitat <2>; this is similar to samples from a 13th century context within the inner moat [6526] at Castle Hall immediately to the north.
