Full description

The mid 17th century house built by Sir Henry Pope Blount [9669] had formal gardens laid out to the south. In 1700 Chauncy noted that Sir Henry had 'made fair walks and gardens' to accompany his new house. Excavated traces <1> include a long boundary wall in English bond brick, an avenue and clusters of trees, planting beds, a walled enclosure, small structures, a possible column plinth, and a dovecote. Most of the excavated features appeared to date to the 17th and 18th centuries. The avenue is on the 1766 map <3>, and until the late 18th century led to a gated entrance on the London Road. The map also shows a curvilinear park surrounded by a pale (fence) north of the house (see [9972]). In the decade 1767-77 the formal arrangement (and the curvilinear park) was swept away and turned into more fashionable open parkland around the house, with gravel walks <1>. This arrangement is shown on the 1822 map <4>, and in more detail on the 1838 tithe map <5> and the 1879 OS map <6>. The 1879 map also shows a cricket ground, and a well house.
A derelict pavilion in arable, once parkland, was noted by <2>.
