Full description

A large late 16th century house, of a kind that is now rare in Hertfordshire <1>. It occupied the sites of 97-101 High street until it was demolished in the 1930s to make way for the Rex Cinema [11466]. Its appearance is documented in photographs, and drawings by Buckler and Blore.
It is shown on the c.1839 tithe map <2>, a substantial house projecting forward into the street and with a rear extension. The later 19th century OS maps <3, 4> show more detail, with additional outbuildings at the back, an eastern extension with a conservatory behind, and trees in the garden.
For medieval use of the plot, see [11823].
