Full description
Mill Bridge carried Bridge Street across the river Stort towards Waytemore Castle [28] and the route into Essex, and presumably marked the site of the original ford, the crossing guarded by the castle. The bridge is shown on the later 19th century OS maps <1, 2>. On the north side the river was directed into a narrow channel; on the south side the bridge was lined with three buildings, behind which was a mill pool. The water ran beneath the central building, which was presumably on the site of a mill.
By 1968 <3> the central building had been demolished, leaving a weir and sluice beneath its site. In the later 20th century the river [30730] was diverted 100m to the east, its course north of the bridge becoming Old River Lane. The bridge disappeared at the same time.
