Summary
Well of Roman form associated with cropmarks
Monument Types
- WELL (?, Roman - 50 AD to 409 AD)
Protected Status
- SHINE: Cropmarks of Roman settlement, Kelshall
Full description
A circular shaft which opened suddenly in a field of beet north of Kelshall village and west of North End was over 7m deep. It was about 1m in diameter with straight sides and visible cut marks, evidently a well cut into the chalk. There were no finds, but in form it is very similar to excavated Roman wells at Baldock <1>.
The well is presumably to be identified with a macula visible in the same position on <2> and other aerial photographs; see [6218] for this and other cropmarks in this field ('Shiplands').
See also [30841], a wealthy Roman burial found 145m SW of the well. The cropmarks appear to represent a Roman settlement.
