Full description
In 912-13 King Edward the Elder built two defended settlements or 'burhs' north and south of the River Lea [9828, 9830] <1>. The Southern Burh was probably deliberately planned by Edward as a town. The town at Hertford developed in the 10th -11th centuries to the south of the Lea, focused on the Market Place area. There is evidence that by the 11th century, the town extended beyond the boundaries of the Burh along Railway Street [9886]. Following the Norman Conquest, a royal castle [77] was built to the west of the town. In 1086 Hertford is recorded in Domesday Book as a Royal Borough with 146 burgesses, 54 houses and 2 churches <4>. The focus of the town appears to have shifted westwards, towards the Castle, from the 11th century, with the development of tenements along St Andrew Street and Castle Street. The town does not appear to have expanded significantly during the medieval period, and may have declined to some extent, following the success of neighbouring Ware, after the bridge at Ware was rebuilt in the 12th century <5>.
