Full description
In the 16th century a beacon was maintained by the River Lea. Saxton's map of Hertfordshire shows a beacon on a hill on the south side of the Lea in the area that is now the golf course. The most suitable spot was probably at or near the barrow [98] <1>. The barrow is now surrounded by a housing estate <2>.
These beacons were part of the system set up or renewed to give warning of the approach of the Spanish Armada in 1588 <3>.
