Full description
Circular mound c18m in diam., 2.1m high, surrounded by dry moat c3m wide. Excavation revealed cross-beam foundations of a sunk post-mill at c.1.8m depth (of late C14-early C15 type). C13-C15 finds, but predominantly C13 pottery. Since cross-beams appeared to cut into an existing mound it may be a re-used 'motte', though possibly mill makers re-used a Bronze Age barrow <1>. A mill is recorded in 1222 <3>, and <2> notes a 'Mill Field' nearby, but nothing is shown on Seller's Map of 1676 <5>. Site covered by scrub and trees <4>.
