Full description

Early 14th century unaisled church. W tower, spire and timber N porch early 15th century. Church renovated, re-roofed and W chapel & E part of chancel built in brick c.1450 by Sir William Oldhall when building Hunsdon House [2789]. Restored in 1830 and 1871-2 <1>.
The chapels 'are another example of early brickwork in the county' <3, 7>.
Monitoring of a service trench in front of the west door noted only some disarticulated bone <2>.
On the west jamb of the north doorway are graffiti showing a windmill (a post mill) <4>. The north porch is of timber <5>.
The church stands nearly a mile south of the village next to Hunsdon House. The 1870s re-ordering and furnishing was done by the major Victorian architect Philip Webb. His work here is 'of considerable importance' in anticipating the values of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) which was founded six years later <6>. In the winter, church services are held in St Francis Chapel in the village <6>.
