Full description
Wellhead gear. Whole structure of cast iron mounted on framework of iron on top of well. Well is part of medieval monastery of Ashridge [4148]. There are references to previous wooden horse gear in 1575, 1681 and 1748. The present gear dates from the building of the house in the years following 1808. It was worked until c1860. Well 280ft deep <1>. Well house actually inside the house with an adjoining room containing the donkeys. All the gear is intact and the well full of water <2>.
