Summary
Probably Roman ditches and other features in a field called 'Shiplands'
Monument Types
- LINEAR FEATURE (?, Roman - 50 AD to 409 AD)
- MACULA (?, Roman - 50 AD to 409 AD)
Protected Status
- SHINE: Cropmarks of Roman settlement, Kelshall
Full description
Intersecting linear ditches aligned NW-SE and NE-SW. Also scattered maculae.
One of the maculae is a probable Roman well [18740]. There are other cropmarks across the field to the west [16981].
The marks appear to represent a Roman settlement. Some residual 1st century sherds in a wealthy Roman burial [30841] near the edge of the field evidently came from one of the linear features, a ditch into which the burial pit was dug about AD 200.
