Full description
The inner ditch of Hertford Castle moat was seen in a small excavation. Ecological evidence shows that the ditch, broad and open, appears to have been connected to the river Lea and that flax retting took place in it. Little dating material was recovered, apart from a 13th century pot <1>.
An almost complete 13th century pot was found in 1977 <3>. See also [12141].
