Full description

Possibly the remains of a moated site referred to in 1308 as a lodge in the Royal Park of King's Langley <1>; see [4099]. There is a large depression on the moat platform, possibly the result of clay digging. Slight traces of ridge and furrow are also visible in the field <2>. Enclosures are visible to the north of the moat as low earthworks <3>.
The site shows very clearly on the 1947 AP as a rectangular island of approximately 5000 sq. m. To the eastern end of the island is a square feature of approximately 1000 sq. m with a circular feature of around 20m in diameter at its centre <4>.
In 1835 <5> the moat was two-thirds extant and water-filled, with the outline of the eastern arm and its north and south returns still visible. The island was 91m by 65m, with a causeway near the NW corner giving access to a clear rectangular area in the western half. The remainder of the island was covered with scrub and trees, with a belt of trees on the outside around the water-filled portion. The moat was infilled before the 1870s <6>, but is still visible in aerial photomapping <7>. The field is pasture.
