Monument Types

  • DITCH (Medieval to Post Medieval - 1066 AD to 1900 AD)
  • FISHPOND (Medieval to Post Medieval - 1066 AD to 1900 AD)
  • MOAT? (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1500 AD)

Full description

Two linear ditches, one dry, 105m x 15m x 2.5m deep, and one wet, 100 x 10m, in the park [9573] at the Golden Parsonage. Interpreted as fishponds by the OS <1>, their function is unclear <2>. They may be post-medieval water garden features <3>.

They appear on the 1838 tithe map <4> as a line of long narrow ponds, one large and three smaller. The 1878 OS map <5>, however, shows the long pond several metres to the east, unrelated to the other three, and marked 'Moat' in lettering denoting an antiquity. This one is now dry, and the smaller ones have been altered to make a shorter single pond, marked Fish Ponds on OS mapping. Whether the large dry ditch was part of a medieval moat is uncertain.
