Full description
Well preserved trapezoid-shaped moated site, maximum width E/W and N/S approx. 70m; minimum width N/S approx.40m. The moat is 2-3m wide and at least 1.5m deep. The interior is clear and under rough pasture and the moat is substantially tree-grown. An outer bank survives on the N N/W and E sides and there is what may be a drain leat at the SE corner. The pond at the NE corner looks like a relatively modern breakthrough. There is an entrance causeway on the S side.
<1> thought this the site of 'Clothall Castle', the manor of the Hauvilles and Clothall Hospital; see [12627].
