Parish:CAYTHORPE, SOUTH KESTEVEN, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

Caythorpe Hall was built in 1823 for Colonel G. Hussey Packe. It is likely that the construction of the surrounding gardens began at the same time, although many of the features, including the walled garden, appear to be later additions; Bryant's 'Map of the County of Lincoln', produced in 1828 shows only the house. The first map detailing the gardens is the 1845 tithe map, where two rectangular enclosures are depicted surrounding an orchard and the walled garden. No internal structures are depicted, however, though it may be that the scale of the map precluded this. The 1st edition 6 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map does show the smaller greenhouse and outbuilding structures that are associated with the gardens, along with the fountain to the east of the hall, though it appears that buildings had been constructed where the orchard once stood. Part of the foundations of the extant walled garden were exposed in September 2003, during archaeological monitoring within the walled garden of Caythorpe Hall. These foundations comprised roughly hewn limestone blocks, on which the brick wall was built in an English Garden Bond. A small assemblage of 18th to 20th century pottery, tile and clay pipe fragments was found in the topsoil deposit. {1}{2}
