Summary

Site of former gas works at St John's Hospital, thought to have been built by 1852.

Full description

A gas works complex is depicted in this location on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The depiction shows the works to have comprised a main range of buildings with two adjacent gas holders. The works would have provided a private supply of gas to what was then called the Lincolnshire County Pauper Lunatic Asylum, and likely date to the opening of the asylum in 1852. The site is no longer labelled as a gas works and a different configuration of buildings are depicted in this location on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map, suggesting the works were no longer in operation by the time of this survey. Modern housing now occupies the site, and no remains of the former works now survives. {1}{2}{3}{4}
