Full description

A Georgian house built in 1760 for Matthew Lister, replacing a previous manor house. The four-storey house was constructed of pressed brick and had a green slate hipped roof. The neoclassical façade was divided into three bays with the central bay portruding slightly. At the centre of the middle bay was the door, which was raised off the ground and accessed by outdoor steps with bannisters. The door was flanked by pilasters and topped with a frieze, above which was a pediment. The ceiling of the middle bay was interrupted by a pediment, in the centre of which was a round window. The remaining windows of this bay were sashed as are all the windows of the remaining bays, with the two other bays having dormer windows in the top floor. At some point between 1790 and the 1930s a northern extension was added to the house. The interior contained Rococo plasterwork amongst other decorations and furnishings. The house passed through several owners in its later years, being used as a corn drier and potato store in the 1930s, before being demolished in 1958. {1}{2}{3}
