Full description

Known through Stukeley's discovery of a mosaic in 1727 and W Fowler's find of a second in 1800. The site was excavated by J Smith for the Ministry of Works between 1948 and 1949 when it was threatened by ironstone workings. At that time the site was scheduled but was subsequently de-scheduled. The main period of occupation was the late 4th century when a basilican-type villa of at least 7 rooms with mosaic floors was built. The nave had a central hearth and a cobbled approach at its east end. A bath-house was situated about 300 to 400 ft to the south. Saxon finds and burials also reported. City and County Museum, Lincoln has a representative sample of the finds. Accession number 16.59; 51.61. {2}
