Summary

Roman enclosure and timber building

Grid Reference:TF 094 114
Map Sheet:TF01SE
Parish:BARHOLM AND STOWE, SOUTH KESTEVEN, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

PRN 30051
An irregular rounded pentagonal enclosure (approximately 200 feet by 260 feet) with sub-divisions was excavated for the Welland Valley Research Committee in 1963. It contained what appears to be a timber basilican building which is visible on aerial photographs. A ditched droveway leads to the site. Pottery from the site is mostly Romano-British, dating mainly to the early 4th century AD, but some is earlier. {3}

Extensive, probably Roman, occupation site north-east of Barholm, scheduled under camps and settlements. An irregular enclosure, with sub-divisions, pits, post holes?, other enclosures and multiple ditch, at TF 095 114. Connects with another site to the north-east. {5}{6}{7}{8}{14}

Little perambulation possible and nothing seen. Mr. Simpson says the mark at TF 0945 1140 at 'a' (from which he has picked a surface scatter of fourth century pottery) closely resembles one he has excavated at Barnack, Northants, which proved to be a basilican type building. {9}

Mapped by Royal Commission for Historical Monuments (England) in 1960 in 'A Matter of Time'.{6}

See primary reference number (PRN) 34756 for prehistoric finds from the site.
