Summary

DESERTED MEDIEVAL VILLAGES OF AUNBY

Grid Reference:TF 023 146
Map Sheet:TF01SW
Parish:CAREBY AUNBY AND HOLYWELL, SOUTH KESTEVEN, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

The village of Aunby is mentioned in Domesday. Evidence of desertion over a small area is visible on aerial photographs, and St Joseph lists DMV at TF022146, which is where the church probably stood, see 33608 and 33602. The remains of the village are clearly visible on the ground as grassed mounds. Part of the site has been destroyed by recent building and ploughing. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}

Aunby DMV recently ploughed out. SLAU have field-walked the area and recovered some shelly wares. Farmer thought mounds were spoil from excavations by a vicar of Careby. OS produced some curious representations of earthworks on latest maps. {6}
