Full description

Site of the former medieval Church of St James. The church was used as a barracks by Parliamentarian soldiers during the Civil War seige of Belvoir Castle, and was burnt down by them after the Royalist forces surrendered Belvoir in 1645. Very little of the original church now survives, although a large, overgrown mound of masonry fragments is thought to mark the location of the former church tower. This church site is believed to be that recorded in the Domesday Book entries for Woolsthorpe, and may indicate a pre-Conquest origin. The site was scheduled in 1977. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}

Part of the site was de-scheduled in 1983, to allow continued use of part of the graveyard for modern burials. {6}
