Map Sheet:TF27NW
Parish:MARKET STAINTON, EAST LINDSEY, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

A hoard of two or three hundred Roman coins were ploughed up in 1915-6, at Hillside Field, to the south of Market Stainton. The coins were contained within an urn, and were all of the first Tetrarchy, dating between 296 - 305 AD. {1}

The hoard was said to consist of 305 coins, all of which were Tetrarchic folles. A second hoard of Roman coins of similar date was ploughed up near to Market Stainton in 1938-9 (see PRN 40379). It was thought possible that the second hoard actually represented a lower, missed portion of the original hoard. The owner of Market Stainton Grange stated that the second hoard was ploughed up in the approximate location of TF 213 801, however, marking an area further to the west of Market Stainton, and the connection is unconfirmed. {2}{3}{4}{5}

'By 1938, there remained only 186 coins from this hoard in the Grantham Public Library and Museum. These 186 folles were all struck between 296 - 305 AD and are all in mint condition, any difficulty in deciphering being due to corrosion. There seems no doubt that the whole hoard of over 300 coins was made up of such folles, and must have been buried about 305 AD, before the coins had ever been in circulation.'
Lists of the original 305 coins and 186 surviving coins were made, showing that they were all folles, ranging from Diocletian to Galerius (284 - 311 AD). No part of the jar found with the first hoard remains. {6}
