Full description

A probable Bronze Age round barrow is recorded as having been at Ranby Hoe, to the south of Market Stainton. This large tumulus was said to have been levelled by the landowner in 1833. It was located close to the Horncastle and Caistor road, off the road leading to Goulceby. It was said to be comprised of an earthwork mound 21ft high, and measuring 96ft in diameter. During the removal of the tumulus, a skeleton of large dimensions was reported to have been found towards the western face of the mound. A large pair of stag's horns were also said to have been found in the centre of the mound, covered by a pile of stones and flints.
In 1922, the Rev. James Alpass Penny said that Ranby Hoe was a large tumulus, located just to the north of Ranby church, and that it was removed 'about 70 years ago'. He further stated that the Hoe was a place of assembly for Lincolnshire forces under Sir Robert Welles, during the War of the Roses. The forces began to march towards London, but ended their lot in Losecote Field near Empringham (Rutland) in 1470. {1}{2}{3}{4]

Cropmarks of a mound or enclosure have been identified in this location, to the north of Ranby church. The feature was noted on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme, and is believed to be the remains of the tumulus at Ranby Hoe. {5}
