A 'large amount of pottery' of Romano-British date was found in this area in 1969, in the course of excavating aircraft remains. {1}

The pottery was identified as Romano-British greyware, and was found with fragments of oyster shells, above a layer of stone sets of pebbles/boulders in Shire Wood. They were found by an aircraft wreck recovery group who were searching for a Second World War German Dornier aircraft wreck (see PRN 48624). {2}{3}
