Full description

A late medieval, sculptured stone panel had been built into the vestry wall of the Church of All Saints, Moorby (see PRN 46704). The panel depicts a man playing a set of bagpipes with two women and a man dancing next to him. The style of the clothing depicted on the panel would suggest a late 15th or early 16th century date for the carving. It is unclear whether the panel had formed part of the original medieval church in this location, or had been brought to the site during the 1866 re-building. The stone was quite prominently placed within the 1866 re-build, but was not mentioned in earlier documentary sources, and was entirely secular in style, perhaps strengthening the argument that it had been brought to the church from elsewhere and re-used. The stone was removed and loaned to the City and County Museum prior to the demolition of the church in 1983. {1}{2}{3}
