Summary

Churchyard at the Church of St Peter, Holton le Clay. Likely dates to the late Saxon period, when the church it served is thought to have its origins.

Full description

The churchyard at the Church of St Peter is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. The current church dates from the 11th century, but is thought to incorporate elements of an earlier church on the site, and it is likely that the churchyard dates back to the late Saxon period as well (see MLI41241). {1}

Excavations in 1973 and 1975 showed the remains of an earlier, rectangular, late Saxon church underlying the current structure (see MLI41241). The excavations also revealed part of a late Saxon inhumation cemetery near the current church tower, with 14 burials being recorded and a variety of late Saxon finds being recovered, including a buckle, pins, a strap fitting and pottery. Later medieval burials were also identified, along with a complex of medieval ditches and post holes. An assemblage of medieval finds was also recovered, including a pilgrim's badge, a book clasp, a 14th century French jetton, a Nuremburg jetton, a bronze pin head and a bronze tag. {2}{3}{4}

Further excavations were conducted in October 1990, prior to the construction of extensions to the Church of St Peter. The excavations were located to the northern side of the church, and revealed several medieval burials, with evidence of underlying Saxon occupation remains. An assemblage of medieval artefacts was recovered, including Thetford ware pottery and an unusual pin beater made from a fossil. {5}
