Aswell spring is documented from 1235 onwards. {1}
Bayley notes that after the Dissolution few things occur more frequently in the Louth parish than the dressing, repairs or scouring of Aswell 'Even less than a century since, (ie. c.1750?) Aswell was regularly dressed in preparation for the ancient honours of perambulation and the prayers of Holy Thursday'. {2}
Aswell spring is marked on the maps of Louth until at least 1839. It is shown feeding a mill south of Walker Gate (now Queen Street) but presumably supplied water to the Monks' Dyke watercourse. {3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
