Full description

Course of part of a Roman road, thought to run from Lincoln to Burgh le Marsh. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}

Part of the course of the road through Orby parish was discerned as a cropmark on aerial photographs examined by the National Mapping Programme (PRN 42944a - TF 4749 6740). {9}

The course of the road in this area is also marked by a number of hedges and low banks, most noticable in the area around Redland's Holt. {10}

A section across the road was recorded in October 1999, during archaeological monitoring of the installation of a replacement gas pipeline between Trusthorpe and Candlesby. The section was to the east of Skendleby, at the point where the straight stretch of road from Ulceby turns sharply south and the line of the Roman road follows a tarmaced farm track (at TF 4484 6975). The pipeline route crossed the northern end of this farm track, and revealed two separate layers of crushed chalk below the modern tarmac surface. It was thought that the lower layer of crushed chalk had formed part of the Roman road, possibly being the original road surface, or perhaps comprising severely eroded remains of the foundations. No roadside ditches were evident in the section, although the trench was very narrow and the ground had been disturbed to the south by the construction of a water pipeline. {11}{12}

Another part of the road's course was identified as a diffuse linear magnetic anomaly in September 2001, during a magnetometry survey conducted to assess the proposed extension to Highfield Quarry, Welton le Marsh (PRN 42944b - TF45126947). {13}{14}
