Full description
PRN 50795
A few hundred yards east of St Peter's across Abbey Close (approx SK 8390 7894) stood St Mary's church, of which nothing now remains. Its foundation walls were used as road material. The cable moulding, said to have been carved on many of the stones, indicates an early Norman date. It is mentioned in the Valor Ecclesiasticus of 1535 and its first vicar was presented in 1220. {1}{2}
St Mary's was amalgamated with All Saint's church in the mid 13th century: they appear jointly listed in 1254, while in 1291 and 1428 St Mary's is not referred to. It has been suggested that the human remains and masonry fragments (PRN 55403) found to the north of the railway (in a field known in the 18th century as Staines Close) may be related to this church, suggesting a different location for it to that suggested above. {4}
A sheila-na-gig carving (PRN 50792) was found in the ruins of St Mary's church, possibly in the early 19th century. {1}
