EARLY IRON AGE POTTERY AND SKELETON FOUND EAST OF HARPSWELL

Full description

A scrap of early Iron Age pottery found recently (1930s) by the Harpswell Cross Roads. {2}

A skeleton, possibly associated with a sherd of thick black pottery with much shell, decorated with string impression and fingertips; the pottery is of the early Iron Age. Found at Hemswell in 1931. {1}{3}{4}

In 1964 Featherston reported that the whereabouts of the finds was unknown. The find spots were within the perimeter of the airfield and field walking was not possible. {3}

The information appears to have been duplicated and there are 3 separate grid references:- SK93839002 (from C. W. Phillips), SK93879005 (from Tom Baker) - both quoted by the OS card; and SK93878998 (from ?AO records) quoted by the SMR card SK 98 NW: B. {1}{3}{4}
