Full description

The Chapel of St Andrew at Apley was built as a mortuary chapel in 1871, when the existing churchyard for the former medieval Church of St Andrew was enlarged (see MLI51188 for the former medieval church, and MLI126418 for the churchyard). The chapel is built of red brick with stone quoins to the north and yellow brick quoins to the south. {1}{2}{3}

The medieval Church of St Andrew seems to have been demolished in the later 18th or early 19th century, and was replaced by a 'brick shed' or 'hovel' by 1816. This building was less than 3m by 4m, and served for reading the burial service. The reconstruction in 1711 of the church at Stainfield as an elegant landscape feature may have given rise to the complementary roles of Stainfield as church and Apley as burial ground and led in turn to the demolition of the medieval church at Apley. The brick shed was replaced at a cost of £284 in 1871 by the superior brick box of the present St Andrew's, with the churchyard being extended at the same time. {4}{5}
